frequently asked questions (FAQ)
I LOVE YOUR STUFF, WHERE CAN I GET IT?
My work is available in my online store. I also participate in a few craft fairs through out the year. Check my homepage or sign up for may email newsletter to learn about upcoming events.
WHAT IS FELTING?
Felting is an ancient technique bonding animal fibers together using heat, moisture and friction to create an unconstructed fabric. The term "felting" more recently means shrinking a knitted fabric to become soft and dense. (technically this is "fulling" since a knitted fabric is constructed, unlike true felt) The resulting fabric can be cut, sewn, steamed and shaped into a variety of forms.
WHAT KIND OF FELTING DO YOU DO?
I primarily felt recycled wool sweaters. They should ideally be 100% wool but a mix of animal fibers can work just as well. A little nylon is ok, no more than 10%. I wash them in the washing machine on hot with detergent and dry in the dryer.
HOW DID YOU LEARN HOW TO DO THIS?
I have a degree in Fashion Design from the University of Cincinnati. At some point I became enamored with felted wool. I bought a knitting machine and started knitting my own fabric which I then "fulled". I also began experimenting with fulling recycled knits, mostly wool sweaters from thrift stores.
I WANT TO LEARN MORE, CAN YOU HELP ME?
While I would love to answer each email I get personally, there is not enough time in the day. Please visit my blog for inspiration and current happenings. Visit my workshop resource link for other sites about felting.
DO YOU TEACH WORKSHOPS?
I hope to line up a few workshops in the coming months. Please sign up for my email newsletter. You will be updated when new workshops are added.
DO YOU SELL PATTERNS OF YOUR WORK?
No, I currently do not sell patterns of my work.
IS IT OK FOR ME TO MAKE THINGS FROM YOUR TUTORIALS?
Yes. I offer tutorials for free, you may make whatever inspires you without permission from me. Of course, I always like to hear back from people that make things from my tutorials. Send photos!
CAN I MAKE YOUR DESIGNS AND SELL THEM?
Respectfully, no. I sell my artwork as a business. My business is new and growing and I need to protect my interests. I retain the copyright for my designs and they should not be made for commercial use.
CAN I LINK TO YOUR SITE?
Sure! Pop me an email and let me know.
CAN I PUT YOUR PHOTOS ON MY SITE?
Please ask permission before posting any of my photos on your web site. For PR requests, I will forward
hi-resolution images.
DO YOU DO CONSIGMENT/WHOLESALE?
Please email me regarding wholesale inquiries. I am currently on a “wholesale hiatus” as I am busy finishing up my second book. Unfortunately, I no longer place my work on consignment.
HOW CAN I BUY YOUR BOOK?
My debut book, Warm Fuzzies, 30 Sweet Felted Projects, was released late 2007. Click the link on my homepage to purchase it on Amazon.com. You may also purchase signed copies directly from me by visiting my online shop.
WHEN IS YOUR SECOND BOOK COMING OUT? IS IT ABOUT FELTING?
My second book, tentatively titled Sewing Green, will be released Spring, 2009, by Stewart Tabori and Chang. While it does include a few felting projects, it offers a wider range of green sewing information and fun projects using eco-friendly materials: organic fabrics as well as recycled and repurposed materials.
HOW DID YOU GET ON THE MARTHA STEWART SHOW?
I was contacted by a producer from the show who stumbled upon my blog. I submitted samples of my work and the rest is history!
