It’s hard to believe that Halloween is almost here…again! It’s a popular and busy time of year for us, as we are very much a DIY costume family. Recently the boys were reminiscing about costumes in the past. These are some of our favorites!

Werewolf, 2008

The werewolf began with my son’s sketch. With a little fake fur, some outgrown clothing, and a little make up: ahhh-oooo! The snaggle teeth only added to the effect.

Anakin Skywalker and Jenga Fett, 2010

In 2010, we were all about Star Wars! Boy, that was a labor intensive year. I do all of the costume sewing, my husband does the gear…belts, jet-packs, helmets. The boys help too and every year they get more skilled and independent with their costume making.

headless guy, 2011

This was a fun one! Not so great for Trick-or-Treating or even parties (if you plan on eating or sitting down) but this costume got a huge positive response!

Pirate and Jellyfish, 2011

This pirate really designed this costume on his own. We went to the thift store together and found just the right garments and accessories to put together. The tri-corn hat was my husband’s childhood hat! Oh, and then there’s me, the Jellyfish…he, I’ve had better costumes, but this was easy and fun!

Last year, the unfortunately timing of Quilt Market and Hurricane Sandy caused a lack of costume photos. My husband and I made it home safely but missed Trick-or-Treat entirely! 🙁

Steampunk Jet pack (in progress), 2013

This year things are coming together! As always there are last minute paint jobs and new ideas for this and that. Here’s a little sneak peek of the jet pack for one son’s steam punk character! I’ll let you in on a little secret. It’s not too visible in the Star Wars photo, but this is actually the same jet pack that Jenga Fett used a few years ago! Yep, we’ve gotten to the point where we are repurposing our own Halloween costume components! I can’t wait to show you the finished result.

What are you doing for Halloween?
