As a kid it always seemed like Halloween took forever to arrive. Now it seems to sneak up so fast! I usually end up running out of time to design fun new projects. That said, today I managed to put together a short and sweet embroidery-on-knits tutorial just in time for scary season!
I whipped up 3 little embroidery ideas to add some Halloween charm to a sweater, hat or any other knit accessory. These would be so cute covering a moth hole, stain or just a playful accent on a ho-hum sweater. Each one measures about 1″ in diameter (not counting lashes, legs or stem!) and they are addictive to stitch!
I used a chenille needle and tapestry yarn, but any worsted weight yarn will do. All 3 designs start with the basic woven wheel rosette. You can find my video tutorials for all of the embroidery stitches used here on my youtube channel.
Evil Eye
Create a woven wheel rosette making the “spokes” 1/2″ long. Weave the first few rounds in green yarn for the iris then change to white yarn for the rest of the eyeball.
Make a black French knot in the center for the pupil. Embroider a black chain stitch around the eye then add single stitch lashes.
Do you feel like someone is watching you?
Jack o Lantern
Create a woven wheel rosette making the “spokes” 1/2″ long with orange yarn. Add 2 black French knots for the eyes and black backstitch for the mouth.
Make a vertical lazy daisy stitch with green yarn for the stem, then add 4 straight stitches at the base of the stem as shown.
Quickest jack-o-lantern I ever made and no pumpkin guts!
Fang the Spider
Use purple yarn to create a woven wheel rosette, making the “spokes” 1/2″ long. Use a backstitch to create 4 legs own each side.
Use black yarn to make French knots for eyes and to backstitch the “web string” from the center top. Add 2 single stitch fangs with white yarn.
I’m not a huge spider fan but this guy is kinda cute.
What do you think? I hope you enjoy stitching your own spooky little friends. If you want to learn more about embroidering on knits, I have a whole class! You can check it out in my online school >HERE<
