There she is…sweet mama blue bird!
This was my first attempt at needle felting an animal. I followed the tutorial previously referenced in the “little nest” post. I photographed the steps as shown below.
1) First I Google Image searched “bluebird” and printed out a visual reference. I needle felted the basic body shape in white. I decided to skip the legs and feet since she will be sitting on her eggs in the felty nest.
2) Next I added blue detail on the head and back.
3) I needle felted the tail separately until I was happy with the shape, then overlapped it onto the back.
4) Red detail added to the breast.
5) Wings made separately as done with the tail. I tried to get them approximately the same size and shape.
7) The beak was tricky…so small and difficult to shape!
The whole process took about 2 hours. It was really pretty easy but requires patience. I recommend cleaning your felting needles with alcohol before starting, because it is likely you will poke yourself! I am by no means an expert on this…you should give it a try! Update: Here is another great bird making tutorial that I was reminded about!
Hopefully this isn’t going to post twice…on the other hand…reading a compliment twice isn’t so bad is it? 🙂 I LOVE your felting…and thank you so much for your generosity in sharing your techniques with tutorials. I’ve saved the directions and will give it a try-I’m envisioning many birdies throughout my house. You’re quite an original artist!!! Hope you’ll keep sharing with us who are better at “following” than “leading” 🙂
at this point i needle felt stuff onto denim and things like that(only 2-D!!!) but how do you make the original body? is it a clump of fuzz felted together, or is there a hard core? (woops i guess not, or else i might break my needle) ill try it! it looks fun and ur mommy bird is very cute!

This is beautiful! I just made my first felted owl last night, and now I’m making a sheep. The owl is more odd/cute, but now I want to make a more realistic bird like you’ve done. 🙂
I want to make a couple birds for our gnome house. These will be perfect. Thanks for sharing this tute. I’ll be linking on Facebook.
Hi
I really like your birdie, it is adorable. I just started my first one a little brown wren I think it might be, last night. I just started a needle felting blog to gather together tutorials & ideas into one place & to add hints I haven’t found anywhere else. can I link to your bird tutorial?
Hope this doesn’t post twice
Have a good one
