This wacky little pillow was created using the Shibori Felting technique, combined with a little needle felting. Shibori is a term for traditional Japanese resistance dye techniques. Similar techniques can be used when felting wool. By keeping parts of the fabric from felting you can make amazing three dimensional surfaces!

For this pillow, I used a square of fabric from an unfelted wool sweater. The bobbles were created by tying off sections of the fabric around large beads. After felting (a trip through the washer) I untied and removed the beads. The fabric felted between the beads and left permanent “bobbles”.

For the finishing touch, I needle felted a few scraggly tendrils in between the bobbles!

If there is interest, I will post a full tutorial on the Shibori Felting technique in the future.
