This Christmas stocking is a tradition in my family. My Grandmother started knitting them for the family back when my dad was a little boy. All of us “grandkids” have them and any other new family members. They each have our names knit into the top on one side, the year of our birth on the other. You gotta love a handknit stocking. Nice and stretchy to hold lots of stuff! And perfect for putting the orange in the toe.
Sadly, my Grandma passed away a few years ago. The tradition carries on. Various friends and family members have knit them up for my kids and nieces. I recently asked my mom for the stocking pattern, thinking that I should have it to someday carry on the family tradition when my kids have kids. Seeing as though my oldest just turned 7, it’ll be quite some time before I’m a Grandma myself. If they follow in my footsteps and have children as late as I did, I’ll be in my 70’s by then! Funny, I didn’t care about being a Grandma until I became a mother…until MY mom became a Grandma…I love my kids so much, I want them to know that kind of love someday. If and when that day comes, I’ll be ready with my knitting needles to pass on the wonderful tradition their Great Great Grandmother started.
Happy Holidays, Everyone!

Oh how funny. I’m going through some nostalgia with my grandmothers tradition of making knitted slippers. I blogged about it too.

Here’s to keeping precious traditions alive!
Happy holidays.
Keeping those traditions alive is so important. It means so much to the kids. You find that out if you ever try to change even the smallest detail. They notice and they don’t like it! I love that about kids, they like it just the way it has always been.
I can just see your sweet grandma knitting all of her love into those Christmas stockings, it’s so good.
See you Friday? Let me know if you are still game!
best,

We have hand knit Grandma stockings with toe oranges too! I think part of why I wanted to learn to knit was to be able to make stockings like hers as our family grows. I think it is wonderful that you are carrying this tradition on.
What a sweet story!!
Merry Christmas!
What a wonderful tradition, the knitted sock with personalised names and birth dates is such a treasure. What great things to pass down to your children! Never heard of ‘orange in the toe’ such great memories for you!
What a cool tradition!
Merry Christmas!
