I am so bummed. I have looked high and low and can not find the advent calendar! The boys are hounding me every day as December is fast approaching. Since we moved this summer, we have only unpacked what we need in this moment. (I went foraging for the winter coats before school the first morning the temperatures dipped below 40 degrees!)
A few years ago my brother and sister-in-law made the boys the advent calendar for their Christmas present. This is a photo (a lousy one) I took of it last year…before I lost it.
Basically, it is a square piece of ply wood with little gift boxes attached to it. The lids are glued to the board and the box bottoms have the numbers on them and slide into the lids. As you open each day and get your goodie, part of the story, “T’was the Night Before Christmas” is revealed. I love that part! Especially now that my oldest can read. The images are color copies from my brother’s childhood book. Before you start opening the boxes, the whole thing looks like a big present. A ribbon runs across the boxes in a big X with the bow on top….
I’m in a panic. I’ve gone down in the basement and ripped open every box big enough to hold this. At least I think I have. Darn…I may need a back up plan. Anyone have a quick back up plan?
Meanwhile we are entertaining ourselves with marshmallow snowmen. Have you made these? Marshmallows, toothpicks, cloves, and markers is all you need. A side of cocoa is a good idea.
Yesterday I saw Amanda’s post pointing to Sarah’s fabric trees. Perfect for any marshmallow snowman gathering! My 5 year old picked out the fabrics from my stash and decided which cone should be which print, thread color, etc. He’s a great helper. I was excited that he took interest in my sewing machine and even pushed the foot pedal for me. 🙂
These are snowmen desperately trying to make snow angles without snow. Funny, that’s how I feel about looking for that missing advent calendar!
I know exactly how you feel, I am in the same position. For the first time in 10 years I can’t find ours. I made it – Christmas fabric with small pockets – when my daughter was 2 or 3 years old. I will not feel ‘right’ until it appears. Like you we have turned the house upside down to no avail. I just can’t understand where it could have gone. I spent some time this morning wrapping each small gift in festive tissue, numbering them and arranging them in a basket. Not the same but I hold with the hope that I shall uncover it from ‘the safe place’ I’m sure I put it last year!
I hope we both find them by the weekend.
I hope you find the calendar!! I have the base of mine but not the little piece you move about each day to cover the number!
Love the snowmen!!
I have a fast, cute advent calendar that I blogged about here;http://stone-belle.blogspot.com/2007/10/christmas-socks.html Then I fill the socks with candy. easy easy good luck.
Didn’t see an email address so I’m posting this here. I just watched Marhta today and they made your felt acorns as a craft. The show gave the impression that this was their own idea. I thought you might like to know.

My girls love advent calendars. But we buy a new one each year at a local book store. I love the looks and history of yours, but a store bought calendar might work as a quick and easy “remember the year we moved and mom couldn’t find the advent calendar?” substitute!
Love the marshmallow earmuffs!

Hey Kawaii,
Thanks for the heads up…I will check out the video from the show when they post it.

I just made a quick advent calendar with baby socks. It is martha’s idea and very quick. Stick number sticker on the socks and use little clothespins to clip them to a ribbon. I put a little (thrifted) ornament in each and there you are.
I am having a giveaway on my blog starting today to celebrate my move from blogspot to typepad. Please stop by to enter at http://www.raminthethicket.typepad.com
The advent calendar look wonderful (sorry you couldn’t find it, but it’s understandable given the move etc). Hope everything is well with your settling. Love the marshmallow snowmen, I believe your little one will be a crafty angel soon.
oh no! Good luck with your search. I’m missing lots of Christmas decorations. I know there have to be more boxes somewhere.
Ohhhh which brother?, I need details to make one for my daughter!
Betz- I saw the felted acorns on Martha too, and assumed you would be the guest helping Martha craft, but she did them on her own and never mentioned you. I was so surprised because they are just like yours, and I’ve never seen them anywhere else. They are lovely. I guess even Martha couldn’t resist them. I just hope she gives you credit!
I remember making those marshmallow snowmen for hours and hours on a Sunday afternoon when I was a little girl…so fun! Gland you found your calendar!
