Another week, another shop update…that has to be a record for me! I gave it some thought and decided to offer the Cupcake Tape Measure design as a PDF pattern. As you may have noticed, the Cupcake Tape Measure *kits* sell out in a snap. Nice problem to have, but a problem none-the-less. I hate to disappoint anyone and I always do, each time I offer the kits and they sell out. Now before you say “but I gotta have a kit!”, hear me out. The beauty of buying the pattern vs. the kit is that the pattern costs less than the kit, there’s no shipping fee, and you’ll receive the PDF pattern (via email) in 24 hours or less! Plus I won’t ever run out. 🙂
The original Cupcake Tape Measure is made out of felted wool sweater scraps (left in photo). If you don’t have any felted wool laying around, I’ve added instructions for a craft felt version as well. (right side of photo) Click on over to this item in my shop to view the materials list. I recommend a wool blend craft felt and as far as the actual round tape measure mechanism, I get mine at Joann’s.
Now, who are those odd birds lurking about? I finally got back to making some of these zippered bird pouches.
I designed and perfected the pattern for these years ago. I usually make them for craft fairs because they show well in person. I like to mix and match the felted wool for the sides, tummy and wings, then coordinate with a print lining on the inside. They are a lot of work so I can only make a few at a time! I thought they’d be super cute as a valentine gift for somebody’s sweetie.
Hope you’re all having a nice Monday so far. Cold and snowy here. Brr.
Oh I just love that bird pouch, so creative! Have a happy day 🙂
I love those bird pouches and the wonderful information you have on your site!
I have an award for you on my blog!
Hey Betz,
Glad to hear you went out in the cold anyway, you go girl!!!(Sorry i don’t generally say that but think it applies here!)
I’ve been working on making aprons for v-day gifts, using a cute print and then adding wool embelishments, so far so cute. Only 3 more to make. Also finished a giant dog bed for the 2 dogs made out of sweater scraps on top, cute print on the bottom. 4 bags of polyfil, but still cheaper than Costco!!!!
Lately I’ve ben pondering making some seat covers for the volvo out of felted sweaters, what do you think?? Nuts, or good use of recycled materials?? Anyway, we’re exercising by vacuming and mopping this morning!! Super cold Monday cheer, Mariah
They’re wonderful! I’m off to have a peek at your store!
Now you’re going to have to come up with a make your own bird pouch pattern. Because, just my luck, because I’m not on my computer 24/7, I missed out on them AGAIN!! wahhhhh!
It’s always something, right? LOL LindaSonia ([email protected])
I just discovered your site and I LOVE it! I’ve been looking for a location to land and rest (instead of flitting around from site to site and suffering from “piecemealitis”) and learn about felt, felting and applicable/related craft projects.

Ditto on making a pdf pattern for the bird pouch!
I saw your article in Craft: magazine today at the Borders in Manhattan. It must be so exciting to see your face staring out from news stands all over the country! The article came out great, well done you!
Believe me, you don’t want to make the bird pouches…they’re fiddly I tell ya! 🙂
Those little bird pouches are so adorable, I can see why they are hard to keep in stock. Too bad I missed out this time, but I will try again.
Hi Betz,
I have been working with felted wool sweaters for about 4 years now. How do you get your zippers to look so good? Mine always look wonky. People are always asking when am I going to put a zipper on the top of my bags so that none of their stuff will fall out. Do you use some kind of stabilizer? If this is top secret, I understand.
Your bird pouches sure are cute!!
Cindy
Cute little birds! I noticed that you live in Maryland. Are you teaching any classes in the area? I live west of Baltimore.
Thanks!
PS – I’ve been collecting sweaters and my husband keeps asking why!?! I’m a quilter and he just shakes his head….do you have time for another project?? Of course…silly man!
Very cute…great job.
Jen
I know you said those bird pouches are hard…but I gotta tell ya, I’d love to take a crack at them…do you think you will write a pattern for purchase and download?? Please, pretty please…I, too live in the great state of Maryland (Annapolis, to be exact) and we have had TWO snow days….am getting antsy!
I shared your cupcake tape measure on my blog today… plus (!!) I have nominated you for The Lemonade Award. Grab your award on my blog.. http://compulsivecrafter.blogspot.com/ <3
One more vote for a PDF pattern of the bird pouch! It’s so cute I HAVE to make one – I’ve been obsessed with embroidering birds lately and making a 3D pouch will be a nice diversion. If it’s as fiddly as you say I’d love to have your instructions instead of trying to figure it out on my own. . .
Ooooh, I love these birdie pouches! I want one!!!
