Last year I made a field bag for the boys out of an old pair of outgrown cargo pants. I used this field bag tutorial (via the Crafty Crow). I just love this idea! Many cargo pants come with great pockets and I hate the thought of getting rid of them just because the knees are worn through.
Since then we’ve used this bag for Letter Boxing and in today’s case, rock collecting for a school assignment at a local State Park. Have you been Letter Boxing? It’s great fun and now that the weather is getting nice I want to start scoping out new adventures near us.
Fun post! Over the years as my boys were growing up I did the same things for them. I just love the pockets on pants-especially the crago ones. They would put their army men, sticks, stones, and of course bugs in them. Doing laundry was always fun~LoL! Thanks for this post brought back memories!~Smiles~Tam!
Those field bags are adorable. I bet my 2yo son would love one. He likes bags! Letter boxing is so cool, too! 🙂
Amen to using cargo pants pockets! I added one to a bag I made many years ago.
My husband and I stumbled on a letterbox last year on a hike. I just love the different stamps!

Thats an idea for the to-do list!!
I love it!!! The backpack is too big for a local excursion, but my five-year-old doesn’t want anything too “girly.” Thanks for pointing this out… I’ll definitely be making one! Our family LOVES to letterbox!
ah, i love your bag! so glad you were inspired by the tutorial — it’s so true, those pockets on cargos are too cool to waste. :^)
What a great idea! Thanks for sharing. Letter boxing sounds like fun. I had heard of geocacheing but not of letter boxing. Once the snow melts, I definitely think our family will give in a try. I love your blog!

Betz, what sweet pictures!
My nine year old seems to be on a mission to put his knee through every pants he owns before the start of spring! Ok, in his defense, some of them have been through his two older brothers, but not all. I too, love those pockets. I often cut them out and use them in bags…stuck in the front of scrapbooks for putting special keepsakes in. The really are great. Pockets generally. Last year I made a little bag for me reusing the denim back pockets from my jeans. I’ll have to check out this letterboxing,,,
