Between bad head colds, days off from school and a husband working a lot of overtime, the past week or so has been discombobulated. Laundry has piled up, my work projects have come to a halt, and meal planning has gone out the window. Amidst the chaos there is one thing I am certain of: We are a household held together by Legos. Thank goodness for the hours of creative entertainment those little colorful blocks provide. The boys build, they play, they invent. They share (mostly), they pretend, they imagine…
I feel compelled to write a little booklet called, “Everything I know, I learned from playing with Legos” or “Life Lessons Learned from Legos” or some such titled book. An excerpt:
“It takes patience to find just the right piece”
“If a something doesn’t fit, it doesn’t fit. Wanting it to fit is not enough.”
“Sometimes in life you have to stop looking in order to find what you need.”
“If you step barefoot in the dark, you may find what you are missing. The hard way.”
“Even the most plain and simple thing can be part of an amazing masterpiece.”
“Sometimes you have to just pick up the pieces and start over.”

By the way, thank you for all over your votes over at Poppytalk. You guys rock! Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Fingers crossed!
Betz, We are for SURE a Lego household. I can’t begin to count the number of pieces and ‘sets’ the boys have. They are the best toys out there. I love the fact that it takes imagination and a plan to create a Lego masterpiece.
It sure keeps them busy (and that’s a good thing too!)
Fun post :o) Love the images, so cute! Hope you’re on the mend…how frustrating to get knocked off schedule from being sick (amongst other things). I can’t wait till we’re a lego household! My daughter is 19mths old and has a few thrifted “megablocks”. Ran ’em through the dishwasher and they were sparkling new again :o)
Hip Hip Hooray for Lego! Best toys of the year, every year! One of our faves is the handful game…where each person digs into the bin for a handful and you make what you can what you grabbed! (your word verification is mocking me. it says carbsac. poo on that.)
Yes we are a Lego household. Love your words of wisdom. 🙂 That iPhone app looks cool too; i’ll have to check that out. My Lego-lovin’ 6-year old would get a kick out of that. 🙂
(Raising hand) VERY much a Lego household. I remember playing with them a lot as a kid myself – so of course I had to pass it on. 😉
– downloading that ap now!
Yep, we are also a LEGO household. I’m in the quite fortunate position of spending every single working day in a LEGO filled office too. Can you guess who I work for?

Oooh, we’ve been playing with this lego app too…the only problem is that now we all want to buy the tiny one brick lego pieces to recreate the lego collage to hang on the wall. I’m so tempted.
Your pictures are lovely – very smiley. x
My childhood was shaped by lego!
We are very much a Lego household! Everysince our son was 4… he’s now 15! Recently, an 18 yr old we know & love put all his Lego people back together! He was at 187 last time I checked in… I’m going to check out that app on hubby’s iPhone. Thanks for sharing!
Lego and using the word “discombobulated” in a post? My Hubby might leave me for you.
Legos – one of the best toys every made. Seems you can never have enough of them and no matter what your age they are still fun to creat with!
Wonderful LEGO wisdom. We were slowly leaving the lego building phase when my son discovered how perfect they are for stop motion films. A whole slew of creative ones on You-Tube inspired him and now he makes them himself. LEGO LOVE has been rejuvenated! Hope this week gets you back on track. Feel better soon!
You know that asking if we are a Lego household is like asking if we breathe. And now I have to get this app. Its fantastic!
I love this post. I speaks to so many of us. Have you and your boys ever had the opportunity to see The Art of Brick? It is an art display by Nathan Sawaya done entirely out of Legos. It is absolutely amazing. His sculptures are awe inspiring. It is incredible what someone can create with those amazing little bricks. If it ever comes to your area, don’t miss it. We had the pleasure of seeing it in Park City UT. It has to be coming to a city near you.
My son had the opportunity of his young life to travel to Legoland in CA this past year, he saw the 2008 inauguration reconstructed in Lego!
Double yes to that! My husband has a 22 gallon storage container filled with loose Legos that he grew up with and has been adding to through the years. He is just giddy thinking about the day when our daughter is old enough to play with the small pieces. It will be a good bonding experience for them.
Oh yes! And I think there is nothing more painful then stepping on legos when you’re barefoot!
Oh yeah! DS age 6 is completely obsessed. We have joked (but it may be true) that we have more Lego at our house than some entire small countries… 🙂
We all love lego – I think I enjoy the making as much if not more than my boys! Just as well with birthdays and Christmas gifts, I have built 7 big sets in the last two weeks!!:)
My 7 year old son is all about Legos. He loves to create new things with them. He would love it if I had an I-phone and could turn his picture into Legos. Very cool. 🙂
we are a lego family too! I just blogged about my boys’ rooms yesterday. it is my 10yr old that is the lego fan. I LOVE the lego photos, that is so cool.
We are such a Lego household that my son has the Lego catalogue completely memorized within 5 hours of it entering our house. We have not seen the floor of his room since 2006 because it is covered in Legos. He combs YouTube for new videos of Legos. He wants to go to Lego camp and doesn’t care that he has to leave us for a week. He can out together a 1500-piece Lego set in less than a day. All his friends have him over to their houses after Christmas and birthdays so he can help put together their Lego sets. And yes, he wants to be a Lego designer when he grows up!
Hello I*Love*your*blog*
You might not believe this but, the year before last I went to a health professionals Creative Arts masterclass and there was a workshop about the therapeutic application of lego in Arts/healthcare.
How fabulous is that? Or did I just spoil that for you?
Hope not x
Oh, my goodness, Yes! Our basement has a huge area that is our 3 boys’ LEGO area – each has a long table with many built sets, and room for building more. And then we also have a dozen or more bins of random pieces that is a free-for-all for everybody (that often end up on the floor, the better to search through!)
Did you know you can buy individual pieces (of almost anything) from thousands of sellers on bricklink.com? It’s kind of like Ebay for Legos. We love it.
Do you know that Lego makes an Advent calendar and it is different each year? I was in Columbus, Ohio and went to the Lego store and they had them in early Nov. Target also may sell them, as I saw them in an ad, but not at the store. They sell out super fast so you have to be ready to move if you want one.
Anyhow, I got one for the kids to share (Legos are expensive, right? This set sells for about 25 bucks.) Sadly, one child got Santa and one got his sleigh. There would be no swapping as the child who got the sleigh said it was his only air powered vehicle, and therefore, extremely valuable. The theme and the people and the accessories change each year. I tried to find one in Dec and the prices on line were outrageous.
Mark your calendars to start looking early next year. And save up for more than one if you anticipate sibling rivalry and not cooperative sharing.
LOL – couldn’t help laughing heartily at the under foot comment. Yes, it hurts like nobody’s business.
We’re also a lego household and have been for years. I didn’t grow up with them myself but I do see the attraction now. Of course they do seem to multiply like gremlins.
My kids like the duplos so much they’ve never even wanted to move on to the tiny legos.
Here’s another Legoism:
“When you’re frustrated because you really need a red piece but there aren’t any more reds, just try a blue piece instead. You might be amazed at the result.”
Yes we were a lego household, pirate ships, space ships, gas stations, etc..My son loved them..he is now 26 and I kept a med container full..whenever little kids come over they zoom to the container…love it..no home should be without legos
i teach the chemistry of essential oils with lego. suddenly most of my students understand the hated subject: carbon atoms have four little buttons, nitrogen atoms with one and oxygen with two, very easy to build fragrant molecules and easier to imagine more complex molecules!
love, love, love legos…even when they get sucked up in the vacume. Everyone is their own designer.
