Well, I’m back…more or less. I have to admit, I had a tough re-entry for no other reason than pure exhaustion. Quilt Market was busy and fun and all around enjoyable! I still need a few days to process my experience before I blog it, though, so please bear with me. In the meantime, I bring you chickens!
Yes, you heard me, I said chickens. While in Minneapolis for the show, I was lucky enough to stay at my brother’s house for a few days. It worked out nicely to have a comfortable, familiar landing pad after the crazy go-go-go days of market. He and his wife have the sweetest little chicken coop in their backyard and I had been dying to see it in person.
Isn’t it adorable? It looks just like a mini version of their garage. For a few mornings I was in charge of feeding them and collecting any eggs. Currently they only have 2 hens but have had up to 6 at one time.
Fresh beautiful eggs! It’s like magic, really. I’m looking forward to the day when we might live somewhere that is suitable for keeping chickens.
I’ll be back later this week with more news and photos from the show!
Being able to collect eggs in a great wire basket must have made it twice as fun!
I hear what you’re saying about a tough re-entry. I’m not used to all those dinners, gatherings and parties after such a long day.
It was so lovely to meet you, hoping to see you in Houston as well, and looking forward to your post about your Market experience!
Hi Rebecca,
It was great to meet you too! We’ll have to start resting up for Houston NOW! 🙂

That is truly an adorable chicken coop!
I live in Minneapolis and have several friends that have discussed the idea of having chickens. Your brother’s coop is inspiring!
Betz,
It was really nice meeting you at Market. I am glad your experience was a good one– it’s hard to have a bad one I think! (Julie introduced us after you met Debbie)
Do let me know if you have other questions, feel free to email me regarding the pattern design biz. We all approach it differently, but there is plenty of good info out there. I am happy to help anytime.
Love the chicken coops- I am not allowed to have them where I live, but maybe one day…:)
I love chooks! We have two hens, both black with a green sheen and some brown feathers on their crop area. They’re really tame and follow you around when they’re out of the chicken run. We used to have fluffy bantoms, then rhode island reds, then the one that you have pictured, then some white ones too! Not all at once, but over the years. Fresh eggs are so much better than store bought too!!!
It really is adorable. We also have a couple of chickens and I also find joy in feeding them every morning. Thank you for sharing.

Que bonita!!!
Es como una casa de muñecas para gallinas 😉
Bss
That is an adorable chicken coop for sure. I thought it was a miniature of your brother’s house until you told me it was the garage!
OK. Now I *really* want chickens.
Betz,
Have to say, I loved your post today about eggs/chickens. As you can see, I’m hooked to. Can’t wait for the day when I can have some of my own again!

We had chickens when I was a little girl, and egg gathering was my job. I wish we lived in a place now where my girls could have that chore, but maybe in the future.
I also am really interested in beekeeping though. Which do you think the neighbors mind more…?
Your photos are lovely, btw.
ah- nothing like fresh eggs!
have a great weekend 🙂
Hi Betz
My mom shared your blog with me. My husband and I are beginning our adventures in urban chicken rearing in Minneapolis too! We have two chicks that are growing like weeds. I cannot wait until the ladies are producing eggs for us (we’re hoping the araucauna produces green/blue eggs similar to the one in your basket).
