Over the weekend I had a little time for what I call “recreational” sewing, meaning sewing for the family, not for work! Yippee!
Sewing for the boys is gratifying. Just look at those lounge lizards enjoying their new jammie shorts! They are so appreciative when I make them things, I should try to do it more often. It does get harder as they get older and pickier. But somehow making jammies can be a little more anything-goes and something that even Mr. Tenyearold will wear.
I made these shorts using leftover fabric from some men’s dress shirts I thrifted awhile back. The fabric is cool and lightweight, perfect for those hot summer nights. I used my own pattern, but you can find a few tutorials for pajamas on the web, like these at sew funky and instructables. I love making them a little more fun by mixing up the patterns and colors.
My favorite part? Those sweet gangly legs growing out the bottom of the shorts! Which reminds me, make them looong shorts so they can be worn for more than one season!
Here’s some other fun stuff out there to make using men’s shirts:

Awesome! Awesome! Awesome!
Absolutely love the way you mixed the materials.
great idea !
I am totally going to try this. Have always been a bit more intimidated to sew for my boys but… what do I have to lose? They are pajama shorts and I can mix of patterns or even make them patchwork… the ideas are starting. thanks for sharing!

when my 5 children were small, my stepdad worked at a shirt factory. i got end bolts of fabric. i made sun suits, shorts, dresses, jammies, you name it. i had forgotten all that. thanks for bringing back some good memories. all my “babies” are in their 40’s now.
Salachan,
Aww, I love that story! What wonderful material to have access to!

Hey Betz! Thanks for mentioning me as a source for pj tutorial! 🙂
I’ve now moved over to wordpress and have a “proper” website now. The new address for the pj tute is here…

It’d be great if you could change the link for me… 🙂
Thanks!
Love, love, love your blog so it was a lovely surprise to be mentioned on it!

What fabulous shorts! I love that they are repurposed men’s shirts– you are my inspiration in using thrifted fabric.
These look great – my children could certainly use some.
Thanks for the links.
Warm wishes, Tonya
Oh this is such a great idea! We’ve been needing some shorts to sleep around here. I don’t think even I can mess up something like this.
Love these. Love the color combinations you chose. My hubby just ripped a hole in the sleeve of one of his shirts… little does he know the plans I have for it.
Thank you for posting! I just needed to renew my husband’s (and my children’s too) wardrobe! This post will be very precious for me 🙂
