In the midst of my scurry to get everything done for Quilt Market, there is costume making. We love Halloween around here and I’m afraid we have created monsters (in more ways than one!) with the elaborate costumes we end up putting together for the boys. Last year was a doozy. This year we proposed a scaling back….
But like most undertakings, we suffer from “project creep”. One detail or idea leads to another and the next thing you know, your zombie costume that was “just some ripped-up out-grown clothes” has layers of zombie skin peeking out from underneath. So, I’m putting the deadlines aside for a bit to indulge in my guys’ creative process.
My other son has decide to be The Great Pacific Trash Vortex, or “Garbage Gyre”. Time to get out the hot glue and the recycling bin! I’ll let you know how that one turns out.
Have a great weekend! Hope there’s some pumpkin carving in store for you!
Oooh, love the zombie skin! What is that made out of? Some sort of knit? My 8yo is going to be a zombie (from the game Plants vs. Zombies). My 6yo is going to be the “plant” — a pea shooter! I’ve been focused on that since it seems much harder to make than the zombie one. Will post it soon on my blog.
The “skin” is some kind of double knit I found in the bargain remnant bin! See? I bring it on myself. I just knew it would be the perfect addition. My guys like that P vs Z game too!
Thanks! Hmm…double knit….
OMG cute girl!!!
You are so creative ~ I love all your ideas. Especially the one where you put your boys first ;) It is such an amazing gift to be a mom and to enjoy these fun times, you make it even more personal by creating their costumes with them. Have fun!
Great costume! I love it when kids get into their costumes in such a big way. They’re lucky you’re up for the task!
This is the best time of your life. What a privilege to be doing this with your sons. And thank God they aren’t 12 year old girls who insist on a cute but scary, flowy but not too flowy ghostly tulle outfit that needs to work in 42 and under degree weather! Holy Moly!
Wow, was your son’s Jango Fett costume last year 100% homemade? My sons used their own money to buy their costumes (Jango and Darth) after years of homemade costumes. I focused my attentions on Padme, her handmaidens and Princess Leia (complete with tinfoil emblems on her belt!). I have two girls and this was over two years (and I dressed up, too :)). I understand scaling back and then scaling up!
Heather,
Yes, last years Jango Fett and Anakin were both entirely homemade! I do the fabric parts of the costumes and my husband does the structural stuff. your Padme and Leia costumes sound great!
wow- that is an impressive zombie outfit!
