I’d like to introduce you to one of my newest sewing patterns I released at Quilt Market. It’s called the Caitlyn Handbag and it is quickly becoming one of my favorites!
I love the curvy shape and the inverted pleats on the front and back, creating a peek-a-boo effect with contrasting fabric. It was so fun to make this up in my very own prints.
The top edge has a flap with a magnetic snap closure (for ease of use) plus a decorative covered button.
Like all of my Make New or Make Do™ sewing patterns, I also include instructions for making the bag with repurposed materials. In this case: vintage neckties! (I hinted at this version a few months ago.)
You’ll need about 6-10 neck ties to make this upcycled Caitlyn, depending on the width of the ties you’re using. This particular bag has extra sentimental value to me as it is made from my husband’s dad’s impressive collection of ties.
This pattern (along with another I’ll reveal this week!) is now shipping to shops and distributors nationwide and beyond! If you’d like to grab your own in PDF format, they are now available in my etsy shop!
Cute!
And a very classy look look with the ties. I’ve seen a lot of repurposed tie projects and all I can think about is the ties (and what’s dribbled on them over the years), you know? In the back of my head I know this is made out of men’s ties but it doesn’t shout that out, you see the lines of the bag, the interplay of the prints. Outstanding refashioning project!!
(ooo, I could also see using a brass button off a navy blazer)
I have about 200 ties from my grandfather…wouldn’t it be fun to make one of these for all the girls in our family…great idea, and the first really good one I’ve seen for neck ties, I’d actually carry it! 🙂
I am not usually a handbag kind of gal but I fell in LOVE with this one even before I saw the ties version. I am currently finishing up 3 quilts for my sisters and me made from my Dads dress shirts and have been searching for the right idea for what to do with his ties. This is perfect!
Cute! Didn’t I meet Caitlyn at TCC? 🙂
… Caitlyn with ties, that is!
This bag is absolutely beautiful!
Love this!!! Very creative and great use of fabrics, I am going to have this on my ‘get in gear and finish what you have so you can buy more’ list.

I love this bag. It’s soooo adorable!! I will be buying it soon. :o)
I’m looking at this pattern and it’s really cute. I would like a bit more information though. What does the inside look like (i.e. pockets, etc.)?
Hi Deb,
Thanks for your question. The inside of the bag is simply lined and has one 5″ x 6″ slip pocket.
