I leave my socks on the kitchen table. Just the ones I’m knitting. And really, it’s any knitting, not exclusively socks. Lately I have been posting my sock knitting progress on Instagram. Occasionally I get comments that I must be a fast knitter. I’m not at all. I’m more of an opportunistic knitter.

I find that there is a lot of waiting that happens in the kitchen. Waiting for dinner to finish cooking, water to boil, coffee to brew, etc. I can sit at the table in the dim light of the morning with my sleepy middle schooler. He eats, I knit. We are together without talking. Later when my younger son is up, it’s the same thing. We hang out. He has my attention but not in a helicopter hovering kind of way. And it’s good for me, too. Knitting takes the edge off what can sometimes be a mad dash to get people out of the door. Breath in, knit a stitch. Breath out, knit a stitch. (it helps if the knitting is no-brainery)

I used to try to squeeze in a little work in the mornings, between the time kid 1 and kid 2 left for school (a whole hour and a half!). And sometimes I do a little email stuff. But I’m finding that a cup of coffee, some knitting, and sitting still for a moment is a an amazing way to ease into the day.

Have a great weekend. I hope you manage a little “sitting still” time for yourself!
