The Field Study Totes are coming together! I hope you’ve been enjoying the Sew-along, we are getting to the nitty gritty. Today we’ll be finishing the lining and exterior bag construction.

Field Stud Tote Sew-along

Before you do anything else, UNZIP THE ZIPPER! At least halfway, orwhat the heck, all the way open. If you don’t and you proceed to the end of this post without doing so, you will be very sad and say bad words. 🙁

Match the exterior Bag Front and Bag Back right sides together, taking care to align the base and handles at the sides. Match the Lining Front and Lining Back, right sides together. Align the edges and pin around the perimeter of the main bag and the lining.

Carefully sew around the perimeter of the bag with a 3/8” seam allowance, leaving a 6” opening in the side of the lining for turning. Pay special attention when sewing past the ends of the zipper. Do not sew through the zipper tabs.

Next we’ll “box” the corners of the exterior bag and lining to add depth to the bottom of the bag.

1) From the wrong side, mark a 3/4” square in each of the 4 corners (2 exterior, 2 lining), measuring from the seam line.

2) Next, cut on the lines through all layers.

3) Pinch the corner of the bag together, aligning the side and bottom seams with right sides together.

4) Sew across the ends with a 1/4” seam allowance. Box all 4 corners, and trim the bulk away from the intersecting seam allowances.

Carefully turn the exterior bag right side out through the opening in the lining, working out the bottom corners and the zipper tabs at the top. (Aren’t you glad you left the zipper open????) Ooooh, it’s almost a BAG! On Monday June 8th we’ll be finishing up!
