Do you love to sew but are reluctant to try sewing bags? Or, do you love sewing bags but want to take your skills to the next level? I think I may have just what you need!

Last month I flew to San Francisco to shoot some new online classes with CreativeLive! Get ready to learn bag making basics with Build Your Own Tote! In three separate classes, I teach how to construct a basic bag, how to customize the interior and how to add exterior details to any bag. I also share my formula for planning a bag’s scale and proportion so you can create the exact bag you want that suits your needs. I break it all down for you and make it approachable and fun!

I’ve always wanted to design a set of technique classes like this because they really help you build your skills no matter what kind of bag you make or pattern you use.

In the first class, Build Your Own Tote: The Basic Bag, I take you start to finish. You’ll learn about choosing the right fabrics and stabilizers, deciding on the dimensions of your custom bag, sewing the lining, adding a simple pocket and magnetic snap, then constructing self-fabric handles and finish the bag.

The second class, Build Your Own Tote: Interior Details takes it to the next level. I demonstrate 6 different customizations, illustrated with 3 different bags, each using the basic tote as the foundation. Five different pockets, including a zippered divider and even recessed zipper closure.

The third class, Build Your Own Tote: Custom Exteriors rounds things out. Using the 3 example bags, I demonstrate 6 different customizations including pockets zippers and hardware.

And as an extra bonus, this week I’m guest blogging over at the Creativelive Blog! I’ll be sharing posts about various handle options for your bags. See today’s post about adding a pop of color with 2-sided fabric handles. Check it out for the full tutorial!
