Today we’ve reached our third “destination” of the Road Trip Pattern Club! Introducing the Tortola Tank by Carla Hegman Crim of the Scientific Seamstress! Members of the club should already have the email with links to this pattern in their inboxes. Woot!
This easy-breezy tank that sews up so fast, you’ll be out from behind the sewing machine and behind the wheel “cruisin'” in no time. The Tortola Tank is cut on the bias so it has a nice drape and is oh-so flattering. It also has several length and neckline options.
I used a striped fabric for one of my tanks (I’ve made 2 and counting…it’s a great staple!) and I love how it turned out because the stripes “chevron” at the side seams. Another cool thing about this pattern is the construction of the facings at the shoulder seams. Facing the neck line and armholes together is efficient and it lays smoothly. I’ve made other woven tanks using a bias strip to finish the neckline and haven’t been thrilled with the end result. There’s nothing worse than a wonky neckline! I wore this tank to a July 4th picnic with denim capris and my red Saltwater sandals. It was the perfect casual, yet put-together, outfit.
Be sure to hop on over to Carla’s website to check out photos of more Tortola Tanks!

Love it! How much yardage does the small use? I have some Liberty of London lawn that would be perfect!
Because it’s cut on the bias the small uses 2 yards. Believe me, I’ve tried to squeeze it on less and it wouldn’t fit. But! I did see some testers’ tanks on Carlas’ blog post that made the tank on the straight grain in which case you could fit the small. It wouldn’t have that “bias drape” but with a lawn I’m sure it would be lovely!
Maybe I missed it someplace, but what is the size range of these patterns? I’d be much more inclined to buy the whole package if I knew what the sizes included were….
XS-3X! The sizes are listed on the cover shot above. Please follow the link in the post to Carla’s post, she shows TONS of examples in all different sizes! Also, pattern #2, the Kimono Wrap is based on your measurements so it “fits all”! Thanks!
