This spring I jumped into sewing for myself, whipping up baseball t-shirts, tunics, and more. And the sewing frenzy continues this summer! After making my first Tortola Tank, I made 2 more (top row, below) as well as a scoop neck T and a Tiny Pocket Tank. Over the weekend, when I do most of my “sewing for me”, I counted how many tops I’ve made since April…15! Crazy! I’ve made mistakes, but for the most part I’m calling them a success! With every pattern you learn something new. And best of all, I’ve been supporting indie pattern designers…a win-win!
After admitting to my embarrassing amount of sewing for my “upper half”, I decided it might be time to tackle some other garments. There are tons of cute and easy skirt and dress patterns out there. But when it comes right down to it, I just don’t wear them that often. What I’m wearing now? Shorts! I’ve been living in 3 pairs of Old Navy chino shorts. Why not make my own?
I stumbled upon this super cute pattern from Greenstyle Creations, called the Taylor Shorts. You may remember the adorable Centerfield Raglan T Shirt that I made from a Greenstyle pattern. I knew I could count on a clear good fitting pattern and the Taylor shorts did not disappoint. They have a fly front, front pockets and a curved waistband. It’s been about 25 years since I installed a zip fly but I did it! And I made a buttonhole. Phew.
Here’s my gratuitous preppy pose with a pink cardi. (“Oh Buffy! Where is my Bermuda Bag?”) I used Cloud 9’s Geocentric organic cotton canvas and I’m so happy these turned out to be wearable! I did have to make a few alterations to get the fit right but in general, the sizing provided was accurate. What’s a little seam ripping and deconstruction to get things just right? I’ve transferred my changes to my pattern so the next pair should be spot on.
I’m always a little self-conscious in shorts (I prefer capris to hide the things I don’t like about my legs) but these are so cute, I’ll get over it! Besides, the shorts will be getting all of the attention. That said, if anyone has a good capri pattern, let me know!
